Bags of spinach have been pulled from two supermarket chains in Northern Ireland over concerns they contain a bacterium which can cause symptoms similar to the flu. The products have been detected as containing Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause symptoms often associated with the flu, including high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick, and diarrhoea. The Food Standards Agency has warned that in rare cases the bacterium can cause more serious complications, including meningitis. The same product has been affected in both stores, although is packaged and branded slightly differently. In Dunnes Stores the product is sold under the name 'Dunnes Stores Fresh Ready to Wash Spinach Leaves', and is sold in 100g and 75g batches. In Lidl Ireland the bags are labelled 'Lidl Baby Leaf Spinach' and are sold in 250g batches.
